Austria is full of beautiful landscapes and fascinating history.
The Alps offer extensive outdoor activities, from hiking in the summer to skiing in the winter.
The mountains provide a stunning backdrop to numerous beautiful small villages, not least the over-tourism poster child Hallstatt. Rest assured, there are many equally pretty alternatives.
The cities have some of Europe’s finest culture. Vienna has grand palaces, historic buildings, and a famous music scene. Salzburg is known for its baroque architecture and as the birthplace of Mozart. Graz’s old town is recognized by UNESCO.
Austrian food is hearty and comforting. Wiener Schnitzel, goulash soup, and apple strudel are available everywhere. Christmas markets have even more specialties and are a great way to experience a lesser-known side of the country
Austria is easy to explore on your own, with public transportation connecting most places, but I do recommend a rental car for getting deep into the mountains.
